Building a Life out of Words

Building a Life…

What do you want to be? You pick. It can be ANYTHING. As  as long as there’s a market for it. And as long as it pays well. Oh, and don’t forget health insurance. Taking all of that into consideration, the options are nearly limitless. Unless of course you have a family and you’re over [...]

Witness or Judge?

I’ve been a God Lover, all of my life.  Some of my earliest memories are filled with a love greater than myself; greater than the love of those around me. I saw God when no one else was looking.  It was easy to see God in the stars and in my dreams.  But when people [...]

I Am NOT a Trash Receptacle

When it comes to “dumpster diving” into one’s own heart – it’s pretty obvious that I’ll be the first to volunteer.  I love a challenging retreat, quiet meditation, and meaningful worship time. Recently I got Georgia Shaffer’s book, “Taking Out Your Emotional Trash,” and I was anxious to dig in.  And when I say dig [...]

Lost, Halfway Through Season 1

I’m only halfway through Season 1 of Lost (streaming on Netflix of course) and I’m hooked.

I’m struck by the fact that these “survivors” were actually more lost in their regular, daily lives, than they are on this deserted island. Before the plane crash they were surviving, day to day – the same way we all do.

The Marriage Project: “I’m In!”

All you have to do is turn the book over and every husband is ready to commit.  The back cover reads: More love, more laughter – more lingerie Lingerie.  That’s all I had to say and suddenly our “no book study” marriage group is doing a book!  I have to admit, when I first read [...]

Gran Torino – A moving picture of the Christ

Walt.  A man misunderstood.  He knew how to relate to one woman and one dog.  His children were strangers to him.  He never did get to know them.  When his wife died, the dog remained his only companion.  His ways were unchanging while the world around him wouldn’t stop changing. Unwillingly, he found himself being [...]

P.S. I Love You – The Ultimate Journey

I don’t want to ruin the movie for you so if you haven’t seen it, continue reading at your own risk… At first glance, P.S. I Love You is just plain heartbreaking.  The main character, Holly, married her husband Jerry after a whirlwind romance at a young age.   They didn’t have approval from anyone [...]

My Gray Garden

I’m stunned – literally stunned – after watching HBO’s Gray Gardens. I have my own Gray Gardens.  A place I won’t leave the safety of.  A place I won’t trade reality for.  A place where I’m needed when the balance of the world has rejected me.  And just like Gray Gardens, that place can become [...]

New Moon – My Insecurities Revealed

I’m rereading the Twilight series because it brought up such strong emotions for me that I’m just not ready to let it go yet.  Nearing the end of New Moon (the second book) last night, I was surprised to find myself crying.    Since I already knew what was coming, I guess I was able to relax in the [...]

Twilight – My obsession revealed

I have no idea what comes to mind for you when I say ‘Twilight.’  I have no idea if you’re eyes are making a sweeping roll to the right or if your heart has leaped straight forward into judgment.  After all, “Isn’t that a vampire movie?!?”  Yes…Yes it is.  It’s also a story of love [...]
